Introducing Speak Mode

Practice pronunciation inside the article

We have added Speak Mode to Newslang.

The idea is simple: after reading a sentence, you should also be able to say it out loud, copy its rhythm, and mimic the way it sounds. Reading helps you recognize words. Speaking helps you make them yours.

That is why Speak Mode lives directly inside the story experience. You do not have to leave the article, jump into a separate drill, or guess what to practice next. You move sentence by sentence and practice the language that is already in front of you.

Why we think this matters

We think pronunciation improves through a lot of close repetition:

  • hear the sentence
  • repeat the sentence
  • notice where you hesitated
  • try again with better timing and clearer sounds

This is not just about sounding better. Mimicking sentences can also help with word recall, listening sensitivity, and the feeling of what a phrase is supposed to do in context. Even when your output is not perfect yet, speaking along with real sentences can make the language feel less passive.

Honest note about the technology

We have not trained our own sophisticated speech model yet.

That means Speak Mode is not trying to pretend it is some magical accent judge. Right now, the goal is more practical: give you a structured way to speak what you read, get immediate feedback, and repeat difficult sentences without friction.

We still think that is valuable. For many learners, consistent pronunciation practice matters more than fancy claims. If a feature helps you open your mouth, mimic real language, and stay engaged with the article, it is already doing useful work.

What Speak Mode does today

Inside Speak Mode, you can:

  • play the sentence audio
  • repeat the sentence yourself
  • see word matching feedback while you speak
  • move through the article sentence by sentence
  • keep track of which sentences you already completed

We also save local speaking progress on your device, so if you leave and come back later, you can continue where you stopped.

Where this is going

This is an important first step, not the final version.

Over time, we want speaking practice in Newslang to become more precise, more motivating, and more useful for serious learners. But we would rather ship something practical now than wait forever for a perfect system.

If you have been wanting a lightweight way to practice pronunciation while reading the news, Speak Mode is for you.

Update Newslang on the App Store or Google Play and try it in your next story.
